What You’ll Do:
As our Prep Assistant, you will ensure our patients are all set for their spay/neuter surgeries. Your responsibilities will include shaving the surgical area and keeping a watchful eye on them before they go to the operating room. Plus, you’ll help with admitting patients and keeping our clinic squeaky clean before and after surgeries. Job Requirements:
- Be able to learn basic veterinary medical concepts, including but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks
- Be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours
- Be comfortable performing repetitive tasks while maintaining focus and precision
- Be able to learn and consistently follow established processes
- Be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help
- Be able to bend and kneel repeatedly
- Possess an acceptable degree of dexterity in hands and fingers
- Be able to work under stressful conditions and work efficiently and effectively under those conditions
- Be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations (with training)
- Be able to cope with death either due to surgical complication or euthanasia
- Ability to rapidly and accurately process information
- Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help
- Ability to work independently and as part of team
- Ability to cope with frustrating situations and remain calm
Qualifications:
- Experience in a veterinary setting, shelter, or other animal care capacity is preferred, but candidates with relevant aptitude and interest will be considered.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Veterinarian with patient admission exams, including animal handling and restraint and recording exam notes in our computer software.
- Safely and efficiently prepare the surgical area on approximately 40-50 cats each day following established protocols. This includes shaving fur at the surgical site, preparing the site using aseptic techniques, and expressing bladders.
- Monitor heart rate, respiratory function, and anesthetic depth for patients while preparing them for surgery.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with peers and Veterinarians.
- Clean and disinfect animal housing areas after patient discharge.
- Maintain cleanliness and disinfection of work area continuously throughout the day
- Know and apply principles of disease control to all actions to ensure patient safety.
- Perform appropriate routine maintenance of equipment used such as clippers and oxygen machines/tubing.
- Regularly inspect tools and other materials used to ensure they are in good condition.
- Assist with returning post-surgical patients to their cages, carriers, or traps as needed.
- Administer subcutaneous injections and fluids as needed.
- Assist with unloading and/or loading cats from vehicles as needed.
- Assist Veterinarian or Registered Veterinary Technician with re-check examinations on awake animals as needed.

Job Description
Spay/Neuter Clinic RVTs are responsible for the daily care of all surgical patients, including induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients, assisting doctors and veterinary assistants with pre-, peri- and post-operative care, and enforcing and adhering to all medical and animal handling protocols.
- Handle and track controlled substances for large volumes of surgical patients.
- Efficiently premedicate, induce, and intubate any and all patients as necessary.
- Able to monitor anesthesia with a clear idea of abnormal conditions.
- Ensure prompt and accurate paperwork procedures are followed each day.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with the public, trainees, volunteers, and staff.
- Represent OAR professionally and courteously at all times.
- Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures.
- Communicate with clients and assist with rechecks as needed.
- Have knowledge and ability to intake and release patients, including delivering post-operative instructions in a competent and friendly manner.
- Able to respond appropriately during an emergency, take directions from a veterinarian, direct others during the event, and be skilled in CPR procedures.
- Able to glove in sterilely and assist the doctor with surgery when appropriate.
- Able to efficiently collaborate with our clinic team and maintain surgical flow.
- Able to perform all job functions of a RVT.
